The 1800, widely known as the Landcrab because
of its wide stance with wheels at each corner was the biggest
transverse engine front wheel drive car made by the company.
The later 2200's unique feature was its transverse six cylinder
engine which foolowed the design of the four cylinder overhead
camshaft engine used in the Maxi.
The design philosophy of the Mini translated
to a large car give enormous interior space accentuated by
the dashboard that is almost in line with the bottom of the
windscreen. Just like the Mini this makes for a long reach
to the swirches mounted on the fascia.
Power assisted steering optional after October
1967.
Changes to the Mark III included negative
earth.electrics, optional alternator when not fitted with
power assisted steering. Rostyle wheels optional. After July
1974, exterior mirror, hazard warning lights, heated rear
window, and cigar lighter standard.
The 2200 engine version produces power from
very low revs and coupled with the low gearing is more than
a match for cars 30 years younger which are crippled by high
gearing for motorway drviing. It really does need a five speed
gearbox but definitely not the one used in the Maxi which
couldn't handle the power from the smaller engine.
