1933 side valve coachbuilt saloon
|
|
Introduced September 1st 1928
for the 1929 season. Initially in four seater Tourer
and fabric bodied Saloon form. For the 1930 season
a coachbuilt saloon version was available. All three
types were listed for the 1931 season together with
a one -year- only Semi-Sports Two Seater in fabric
two-colour finish. The last of the overhead camshaft
models can be included with the Minors as they continued
to use the same chassis numbering series- these were
the Family Eight Saloon and the Eight Sports Coupe
on a long wheelbase chassis. Apart from the 1932 models,
the Minor O.H.V. cars were fitted with a flat rectangular
radiator with chromium plated finish for the 1930/31
season. Early models had a nickel-plated version with
its surround integral with the radiator core and some
of these sported an additional "MORRIS" motif on the
honeycomb.
The first Morris
Minor, fitted with a Wolsely designed single overhead
camshaft four cylinder engine was introduced in 1929.
The lower cost side valve model was introduced
in 1931. The ohc model was continued in production
until the following year for the long wheelbase Family
Eight saloon and Special coupe.
Contrary to popular
opinion, the side valve-engined Morris Minor did not
immediately supersede the O.H.V. version, for two
years both types in one form or another, were being
manufactured. The first of the side valve Minors arrived
with the "£100" two-seater in the early days of 1931.
Four Seater and Fabric and coachbuilt saloon models
quickly followed this. Understandably, many of the
components used in the first of the S.V. Minors were
common to its O.H.V. contemporary including gravity
feed petrol tank. However in the cost cutting exercise
the S.V. version had a paint finish radiator and had
lost the bumpers, separate side lamps and the chromium
plating on the bright parts. The chrome finish to
the radiator shell and the windscreen surround was
not absent for long, by the 1932 season it was back
again on a new design of radiator with a shield shape
badge. 1933 season saw the same radiator in use on
3 speed gearbox version of the Two Seater, by which
year the other models had a radiator shell which had
become longer and now overlapped the starting handle
hole. The S.V. 5cwt van retained the rectangular radiator
to the end. Major changes came with the 1934 model.
Hydraulic brakes, synchromesh 4-speed gearbox, hydraulic
shock absorbers, trafficators, smaller diameter wheels,
and real leather upholstery on all models were some
of the changes. The body design and in particular,
the mudguards had taken on a more rounded appearance)
these rounded mudguards being used previously on the
1933 season's long wheelbase models).
